Fan Art

A big hello to all my friends and the Fan Art Community on DA!! I am a dummy!

To assist in this Fan Art Week, it occurred to me to write a summary about all of the Community Volunteers who have cared for the Fan Art gallery so far. It is necessary to clarify some points before proceeding, for those new to the site or in need of a quick refresher :) (Smile).

What is Volunteering on DA?

Generally, volunteering is dedicating time to help a community or to the environment, performed by a group of people whose participation is unpaid, hence the name of this wonderful work :). On DeviantArt, there is a team of users called Community Volunteers, the official group is communityrelations. The CVs are divided into two areas: Galleries/Categories and Chats and Forums. It aims to help users / artists to integrate into the community through various projects and special activities as well as providing tutorials and informative articles aimed at artistic and personal growth.

More information: dA Bonus V2-What is Community Relations?

What is Fan Art?

It is simply the art that is made of characters, objects, landscapes and other concepts belonging to stories (books, TV shows, Movies, Video Games, Comics, etc) where the copyright is owned by someone else. Example: An Art of Spiderman, a character who belongs to Marvel can be considered Fan Art.

What is Fan Art Gallery?

It is the category that brings together all those works considered as Fan Art. The main sub-categories are: Anthro, Cartoon & Comics, Digital Art, Manga & Anime, Traditional Art and Wallpaper. The secondaries are:

  • Digital Art: 3-Dimensional Art, Drawings, Paintings & Airbrushing, Vector, Vexel Art and Other.
  • Traditional Art: Drawing and Paintings
  • Wallpaper: Books & Novels, Games, Moves & TV, Other.
  • Anthro, Cartoon and Comics & Manga & Anime: Digital Media and Traditional Media.

At the third level, within these secondaries sub-categories (except Wallpaper), we find: Books & Novels, Games, Movies & TV, Other. Example: Fan Art> Digital Art> Drawings> Games.

To learn about each category in more detail and how to submit the right content in each of them, I recommend that you read this article::  A Guide to the Subcategories of Fan Art

An unforgettable experience!

Now that you know the basics of the Fan Art Gallery, it's time to continue the real purpose of this article ^^. In recent years, the Fan Art gallery has been overseen by a small group of volunteers appointed for this task, and they are supported throughout the rest of the community. Very few people know the Volunteers well and have had direct contact with them, while others are not as familiar with the volunteers. I invite everyone to approach these wonderful people, to give a look to the past for all the things they have done to help our community and use all that knowledge and experience as the basis of inspiration for our own community work ^^.

Community Relations was originally created with the name of Artist Relations and the team members were called Gallery Directors. In October 2008, the group name was officially changed to the name that we all know and the GDs they became Gallery Moderators (currently Community Volunteers). Back in 2007, the Fan Art gallery got its first Director: animator.

Bullet; Pink Juli, whose user name is aunjuli, was the next Fan Art volunteer and considered by some as the Queen of the Empire of Fan Art :) (Smile). She is currently part of the staff of DA and new Director of communityops. During her tenure as GD, she won the heart of many artists through wonderful projects and activities, which allowed her to get to know and become involved in the community. Her most famous projects are:

  • FanChat: A series of interviews with Fan Artists in live in the Chat #FanArtdA. The community members had the opportunity of know to several Fan Artists and ask questions of all kinds.
  • Fan Art Character Bonanza: An event that takes place over the course of a certain number of days. A fandom is selected and each day the members of the community must make a fan art of a specific character of the fandom.

Star! 2009 Star!

Bullet; Pink  In December 2009, Lucia better known as rydi1689, was selected as a Fan Art GM and has worked with elicoronel16. Later, she (Rydi) became responsible for the Manga & Anime gallery with VelCake and Damaged927. Since arriving in DeviantArt, she has shown a great love of Fan Art and unquestionable community spirit. She delighted us with various competitions, special activities and projects aimed at promoting the Fan Art in the community:

  • Fandomized: To promote amazing pieces of Fan Art of talented Artists, with a specific fandom in each edition.
  • Fan Artist of the Month: Each month, Rydi selected a talented and favorite fan artist to give it a well-deserved exposure, highlighting those that stood out in the gallery. Current GMs of the Fan Art and of other galleries shared their comments and opinions about this artist.
  • Articles: She wrote a variety of informative and educational articles about the Fan Art and Fan Artists interviews in the Fan Art Week of PE in 2010.

Bullet; Pink Alexandra (alexandrasalas, formerly Kasumichan2003 and KasumiCR) entered the CR team in November 2010 as a new GM after the retirement of elicoronel. Because of her love for Fan Art and dedication to the community, she became a mentor, having the opportunity to be a GM for a longer period of time. Early in her tenure as GM, she worked on a Fan Art Week of PE with several articles on Fan Art and its relationship with other styles of art (and galleries of DA) as Vector and Vexel Art, Wallpapers, Manga & Anime, Catoons & Comics, etc. She held amazing contests dedicated to Fan Art, such as So I herd u liek progress?, where participants could show off how much they had improved by redrawing older Fan Art, Fan Art Nouveau, to create Fan Arts in that art style, among others. She kept us informed about what's new in the FA community with Fan Art Newslettlers and she was dedicated to promoting talented Fan Artists. She was also a GM for the Cartoons & Comics gallery. She was a CV until 2014.

He dedicated his tenure as a GM to promote the Fan Art in the community through of his Random Fan Art Features showing great various pieces of fan art of different fandoms. We can also highlight a contest called Fan Art Contest: Childhood Memories, where participants had to tell a story from their childhood through the Fan Art. Bullet; Pink Between 2011 and 2012, the Gallery Moderators changed their name to Volunteers (Community Volunteers).

Star! 2012 Star!

Bullet; Pink In March 2012, Jenn (TheCreativeJenn) joined the CR team as a new Community Volunteer in Fan Art. Her period as CV was relatively short (with a duration of 4 months), she had to withdraw for personal reasons and Lyricanna took her place. Despite this she devoted her time to promoting talented Fan Artists, ran contests and created projects related to Fan Art. In July 2014 after the retirement of Alexandra, she had a second chance to be a CV in this wonderful gallery and focused her efforts to help other artists to get involved in the community through special projects, informative articles on the news in the community and contests like Fan Art & Music, with Lyricanna.

Bullet; Pink Rhys (Lyricanna), took the place of TheCreativeJenn after her resignation in July 2012. In addition to Fan Art, she is also CV for the Pixel Art Gallery. She began her journey as a GM in 2010, inside the Digital Dolls gallery and always has shown great love for art and community, adding her efforts and generous spirit that allows her to return to this wonderful community all that it has given her. In the three galleries where she has been or is a CV, she has collaborated significantly with various projects and special activities to give exposure to talented artists, form relationships of friendship and fellowship among members of the community. She also has written several informative articles, features, and interviews for projecteducate. She is dedicated to promoting actively the Fan Art through feature series called Fan Art Friday, that is published the Fridays every 2 or so weeks. She also runs the group CR-FanArt-Contests, an unofficial group that serves as headquarters for contests related to Fan Art, run by the CVs of the gallery.

She still remains a CV in the Fan Art and the Pixel Art gallery to date. She has worked with alexandrasalas, TheCreativeJenn and Ry-Spirit. All of her efforts, contributions and love of art and the community allowed her to earn a spot as a Mentor in the volunteering.

Star! 2013-2014 Star!

Bullet; Pink In September 2013, a new CV was added to the empire of Fan Art: Ry (Ry-Spirit), who worked with Lyricanna, TheCreativeJenn and alexandrasalas, before the withdrawal of the latter. He is known by his incredible talent and love of Fan Art. He delights the community with new and interesting art and features of different fandoms. He conducted contests related to a character or fandom, as Ry and Megachu Contest and Ry Spirit Coloring Contest, where the participants were coloring a fan art drawing done by himself. He also shared his experiences while attending exhibitions, comicons and related events, on various Fandoms. It is considered an important contribution to the fan art community because it will allow the Fan Artists, professionals and novices, have a better approach to the fandoms they love and that are part of his art, as well as motivate people to attend these events where they can meet other fans with similar tastes and become more involved in the world of entertainment.

Ry-Spirit worked as a judge in various competitions such as the Fan Art Nouveau Contest, with Lyricanna, alexandrasalas, JZLobo and SingingFlames.

Star! The last threesome of CVs in the Fan Art gallery, to date, is made up by Lyricanna, Ry-Spirit and TheCreativeJenn. The last two had withdrawn in September 2014 and July 2015 respectively, leaving only Lyricanna waiting for new companion(s) to promote the Fan Art community, the gallery that became the home of incredible and valuable pieces of Fan Art, made by talented and dedicated Fan Artists.

So let's give a round of applause to all CVs and all the artists who have given the best of themselves to contribute significantly within the Fan Art gallery, allowing it grow and reach the level it is now. And I welcome with joy the next new Volunteers from this gallery, whoever they may be, who will make work as great as the former CVs.
